\n With London Fashion Week now in full swing, The British Fashion \nCouncil (BFC) is leading an initiative to promote \u201cPositive Fashion\u201d. \nThe aim is to celebrate best practice in the industry and encourage \ncompanies to make business decisions that create forward-looking and \nproductive changes. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n With this in mind, the BFC has been running a programme of activities \nthat involves more than 78 clothing brands, 103 stores and 346 \nindividual events. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n The city-wide celebrations have included not only designer catwalk shows but \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n also, the discoveryLAB \u2013 an experiential space where fashion meets \nart, technology and music \u2013 and a designer exhibition showcasing the \nwork of progressive designers and themed around sustainability, \ncommunity and ethics. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n This reflects the fact ethical business and sustainability are fast \nbecoming the norm in the fashion industry, with ethical work practices \nexpected to be part of the job description in roles associated with the \nsector. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n The most coveted job in fashion is, of course, the fashion designer. \nIf you\u2019ve always had an eye for style and your finger on the pulse of \nwhat\u2019s going to be the next big thing, this job could see your designs \nmoving from sketchbook and laptop to the cutting and sewing table. From \nhere they could go on to star on catwalks and be bestsellers in \nboutiques around the world. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n It\u2019s a highly creative and satisfying job but isn\u2019t solely about \ncreating next season\u2019s must-have clothing. It often involves project \nmanaging manufacturing, marketing and distribution. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n The manufacturing side of fashion is also big business. According to \nthe British Fashion Council, the value of the industry to the UK\u2019s \neconomy has increased to a record \u00a332 billion, with textile \nmanufacturers helping to drive growth. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n The frontline workforce includes production operatives such as sewing \nmachinists and knitters. Training is often provided, but enthusiasm for \ncreating high-quality garments, an eye for detail and manual dexterity \nare all must-haves. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn\u2019t matter whether it\u2019s a pair of novelty socks or a bespoke wedding dress, quality is paramount, and it falls to the quality control manager to ensure the designer\u2019s product specifications are adhered to.
