Business Design for an On Demand Business Enterprise

Today, enterprises are faced with the challenge of betteraligning the IT investment with their strategic direction.This is especially true for CIOs of the enterprises. In thispaper, we propose the concept of Business DesignIntegration that is a systematic approach to verticallyintegrate a number of Business Design related activities,ranging from strategy formulation, business redesign, tothe redesign of operations environment. It also providesbetter communication mechanisms for different rolessurrounding the CIOs. Role based analysis is critical forour study of Business Design Integration in this paper. Toillustrate how to realize the proposed approach, weintroduce the prototype of Business Design Portal as atool to facilitate the communication amongst peopleresponsible for various aspects of Business Design. Theapproach and associated concepts, prototype tools andmethods proposed in this paper could be useful for ondemand business transformation in scenarios such asBusiness Transformation Outsourcing (BTO) and BusinessProcess Outsourcing (BPO).Key Word: Business Design, Model-driven Approach,Strategy Map, Component Business Model1.

Introduction Never before have C-level executives (CEO, CIO, CFOetc.) recognized the importance of formulating andexecuting a correct strategy in an enterprise. It is acommon challenge for enterprises in all geographies and innearly all major industries such as banking,telecommunication, electronics, etc. Companies are facingglobalization, IPO pressure, BTO/BPO. The eco-systemwhere value networks are built upon has shown itsdynamic features. On the other hand, many IT serviceshave become increasingly commoditized. C-levelexecutives are now concerned more with the businessvalues and impacts when they make significant IT-relatedinvestment decisions.Consulting firms and other service providers facesimilar challenges. Traditionally, it’s acceptable for themto provide silo or point IT solutions to their customers.Today, however, they are asked to offer end-to-endsolutions that could be used to tackle customers’ problemsmore directly and accurately. Furthermore, such solutionsshould help protect customers’ past investment assetsthrough componentization, and provide new functionalityto end users through integration of these components.
