Development of Sports Engineering Discipline in Wuhan Sports University

The sports engineering discipline has unique and clear research orientations and complete talent development system. What’s more, the discipline has the key lab of sports engineering of the General Administration of Sport of China. The paper summerizes the sports engineering discipline development in the Wuhan Sports University and discusses its future development trend.

Sports engineering is an interdiscipline, combined by engineering and sports study. With the development of recent decade, the sports engineering has been involved in different kinds of sports. The sports engineering research and talent development have been emphasized in the foreign countries and many science and technology universities and research institutes have had the sports engineering researches, such as the Cambridge University and Sheffield University in Britain, Stanford University and New York State University in the U.S., Melbourne Science and Engineering University, Southwest Wales University and Sydney Technology University in Australia and Cape Town University in South Africa. Since 1980s, some universities and research institutes have had the sports engineering researches and talent development. In the recent years, the sports engineering discipline has achieved great development and many scholars have issued papers about sports engineering research and talent development in academic conferences organized by the Chinese Sports Science Society in recent years. In 2003, the Wuhan Science and Engineering University has set the doctoral and master degrees of water sports equipment engineering in China and cooperated with Wuhan Sports University to develop the sports engineering talents. In 2005, the Shenyang Industry University began to enroll the undergraduates of sports equipment engineering major in China, followed by Wuhan Sports University in 2008 and Liaocheng University. In 2004, the Shandong Institute of Physical Education set the undergraduate major of computer science and technology and cultivated the sports engineering talents. Wuhan Sports University and Shanghai Sports University began to enroll the sports engineering masters and doctors in recent years. Many sports schools in China have made researches about the development of sports engineering masters and doctors recently. In the past 20 years, Wuhan Sports University and Wuhan Science and Engineering University have cooperated to conduct the sports engineering researches and sports engineering talent development with the key subjects of fluid mechanics, water sports equipment engineering, sports physiology and sports teaching and training. The Wuhan Sports University has had the sports engineering talent development system of undergraduate, master and doctor. The paper summerizes the current sports engineering discipline in Wuhan Sports University and discusses its future development.

CURRENT DEVELOPMENT OF SPORTS ENGINEERING DISCIPLINE

Since the 1980s, Wuhan Sports University began to cooperate with Wuhan Science and Engineering University in the research of sports engineering and the talent cultivation. Sailing, sailboarding, boat racing, canoe, fin swimming, water skiing and motorboat are the sports needing specific sports equipments and the operation of the sports equipments will affect the performance. Wuhan Sports University researches the fluid dynamic function of the sports equipments and provides important assistance for the athletes to master and control the sports equipments and to win gold medals in the water sports in world competitions. Wuhan Sports University established the Sports Science Research Institute in 1994, which is researching the fluid dynamic functions of the sports equipments and the specific training equipment and providing scientific service for the Chinese national team of water sports for the Olympic Games. in 1996, Wuhan Sports University established the sports engineering research institute. In 2008, the sports engineering research institute became the key lab of the General Administration of Sport in China and the sports equipment engineering major was established. In 2009, the sports engineering research institute and the information technology department have been combined. At present, the sports engineering and information technology department has the key lab of sports engineering and two majors of sports equipment engineering and education technology.
